LSA New Fellows & Alumni Event 2024

The new Fellows of the 2024 cohort met with other members of the LSA Fellowship scheme at the annual Alumni and New Fellows event on the 30th January. The event was held in conjunction with the British Protected Ornamental Association’s annual conference.  They were joined at the meeting by Martin Emmett LSA scheme lead, Alex Jenkins HTA, Rupert Weaver, NFU and Coral Clark, managing agent as well as Kym Smith, Robert Sayer and Laura  Pearson, current LSA Fellows.

Everyone had the opportunity to introduce themselves and provide insights into their career so far and their working life. The group heard about Jenna’s career change taking her into a horticultural growing role and Esme’s early experience of horticulture in New Zealand. The group heard from Rupert Weaver who described how the NFU operates and how they represent horticulture growers. Alex Jenkins spoke about the HTA and their work, inviting all Fellows to the National Plant Show and to visit the HTA offices. Via Zoom, Jack Ward from British Growers introduced the association and their work within the industry. Jason Daff, part of the first cohort of the Scheme and representing the Chartered Institute of Horticulture, gave an overview of the Institute’s work and reiterated the invitation to visit the University of York where he is based.

Two of the recent Alumni joined the meeting—Sam Brook and James Crawford joined the call—and gave an insight into the highlights of activities whilst on the Fellowship. They encouraged the new Fellows to make the most of their bursaries and try to attend as many events as possible.
