Fellow Focus

Lucille Gilpin

Ballytrone Nurseries

1st Year Fellow

  • What is your day to day role?

I am a horticultural grower, situated in a 1.5-acre glasshouse in the Northern Irish countryside, supplying hedging and specialist plants into garden centres, landscapers etc. A lot of my day is spent crop walking then setting tasks for the employees to complete that week ranging from potting up, setting out, cutting back. Most of my afternoon is then spent doing fertigation and talking to customers throughout the day.

  • What has been the most beneficial visit that you have attended as part of the Fellowship Scheme?

SmartHort is a major conference by AHDB which was vital in progressing my knowledge in the technology and Smart horticulture that is coming along. The event was a great round up of what is to be expected in the near future. A future which I am keen to be a key player of, the LSA Fellowship program has really helped me to excel in this path.

  • What are your employer’s thoughts on your participation in the scheme?

“The LSA CT Fellowship Scheme has given Lucille a broader scope of the industry and assisted in her networking and building relationships with other professionals in the agri-food industry. It has given her confidence when dealing with customers and suppliers and ability to see the broader business and how they all interlink.”

  • After nearly completing your first year in the Scheme what are your aims for the 2020 year?

Between the Fellowship bursary and my employers time, I plan to continue to use the Fellowship to the full. I now have full understanding of all our sponsoring bodies and in what way they could of be of benefit to me but, also, I have made key networking connections that will certainly help me throughout my career. The current group of Fellows are a great help for many problems I have, I look forward to gaining more knowledge from the next group of Fellows.

  • Do you think you will continue the relationship with your Fellows once you have completed the 2-year Fellowship Scheme?

We already have a group chat together where we have been posting different horticultural issues from which everyone feeds back on their experiences, I hope to continue to receive help from this group well past the 2-year mark.

The LSA Charitable Trust Fellowship Scheme is now open for applications for the January 2020 – December 2021 cohort. For application form downloads please click here, the application deadline is the 31st October.
